‘Alterations at Altitude’ are landscape paintings that slowly change over time. For this, I use self-made unstable paint consisting of algae or iron powder. The influence of moisture and sunlight causes the landscape in the painting to evolve.

Changes in nature occur slowly and smoothly, often unnoticed but evolving alongside us. Similarly, my works progress slowly. Such a process demands patience from the viewer. To make these changes visible, I display photos of different stages of the paintings’ transformations side by side.

Mountains have always been a place where I feel most at home and a significant source of inspiration for me. The peaks symbolize remote nature, not part of our daily lives. While nature is available in the Netherlands, much of it is human-made. We now exert so much influence on nature that even the massive mountains are changing, once seemingly felt untouchable in my childhood.
